If this is the upper crust way of trying to identify with the misfortune of others, being the key word, it is an affront to the masses. No sooner would Hollywood starlets or debutants find themselves in line for food stamps than they would be caught pulling out a pair of six year old jeans worn down by use, holes and patches a reminder of a lack of disposable income, not affluence.. Post gw2 gold Rugby league - a passport to the worldh1 Odpowiedz z cytatem
document.write(" "); if(thumbnailnum>maxthumbvisible)document.write(" "); The slogan proved true enough in the past for many league legends – Ellery Hanley, Garry Schofield, Gary Connolly, Paul Sculthorpe, Mike and Andy Gregory. And now the BARLA connection is still proving a springboard to international stardom for today’s budding superstars such as Sam Tomkins, Wigan, and Kyle Eastmond, St Helens. The conveyor belt of talent shows no signs of slowing up, especially not with three more high profile tours coming up fast under the auspices of the British Amateur Rugby League Association. On the immediate horizon are the BARLA under-19 tours of South Africa (from May 27 playing five matches), under-23s to the Ukraine (June 2) and the under-21s to Moscow (June 24). And interestingly the first of the trips to ‘The Rainbow Country’ signals a return to front line involvement of joint record Great Britain cap holder Garry Schofield as head coach. His assistant is Whitehaven’s Mark Robb following in the footsteps of his late father, Gordon, who managed the historic 1990 BARLA Tour of the South Pacific. There will be no shortage of Cumbrian representation on the playing side of all three up-coming representative tours which underlines that the area continues to be a hot-bed of talent. gw2 gold And despite the growth of professional club Academy teams and scholarship schemes there is no barrier to promising young players wishing to fulfil their ambitions through BARLA representative teams – so long as they remain amateurs. Over the years BARLA has had no greater champions in Cumbria than people like Gordon Robb and his friend, Jackie Reid, MBE, doyen of BARLA Great Britain team managers and one of the survivors from the Whitehaven side that beat Australia in 1956. Regardless of youngsters becoming attached to professional clubs at an increasingly early age BARLA’s international chairman is adamant that BARLA continues to offer the best pathway into rugby league through its scores of affiliated local junior clubs. Insists Jackie: “BARLA has proved itself the best thing that could happen for young players and still is the best passport for the future. “It’s all about attracting them into the game and developing their ability. What better incentive could youngsters have? Not only to represent their country especially on so many overseas tours but also see parts of the world they could only dream of going to. “Above all it’s encouraging more and more kids to take up rugby league. That’s what it’s all about. There’s always been a lot of politics in BARLA, particularly in its relationship with the professional body, the Rugby Football League but, as senior vice BARLA vice president, I supported the amalgamation to form the Joint Policy Board (RL glasnost!) because it’s not about politics but the good of the game. “When I started out there was nothing like there is now. The south of France was the furthest I got playing open age in the forces. “Since the first BARLA tour around 1978-79, BARLA has been practically everywhere whether to France, Australia, New Zealand, America, South Africa or down to the Pacific, it’s broadened horizons all the time in more ways than one. “As a result of setting up the Joint Policy Board we now have Great Britain Community Lions which involves BARLA, the Services and the Police. You could call it a compromise because the Community Lions are open to everybody to gain selection. “What we have now is BARLA representative matches rather than us playing any longer under the banner of Great Britain. “It used to be BARLA Great Britain until we amalgamated with the Rugby Football League, although almost most of the players representing the Community Lions actually come from BARLA competitions. gw2 gold “But we don’t clash – there’s an agreement that the Community Lions only take an overseas tour every other year and us the same. BARLA will have an Open-age tour of South Africa next year.” Jackie Reid’s first tour was the Young Lions to New Zealand in 1983, arguably the most successful. “We won the first of the two Tests and lost the second. The only reason we lost that was because we were virtually in the process of packing our bags ready to catch the plane home the following morning.” Twenty four of the 26 players returned to turn professional, some graduating to play for Great Britain – Garry Schofield, Deryck Fox, David Creaser, Gary Divorty, Richard Eyres and Mike Ford, now England RU’s defence coach. Locally, Whitehaven’s renowned winger Jimmy Dalton made his mark on that Kiwi tour, along with Brian Tomlinson, Michael Smith and Frankie Johnston. Recalls Jackie: “When we went back to New Zealand (in 1991) we had three illustrious props – Terry O'Connor, Barrie McDermott and Paul Anderson, need I say more! “Later on we took the Young Lions to France with O'Connor, McDermott and Anderson still in the pack plus Stephen Holgate and Simon Knox, two Whitehaven lads who also went on to bigger and better things. gw2 gold “But it’s not just about turning professional, you really can enjoy your rugby, raise your standards and see the world at the same time. “Myself I’ve been on two tours to South Africa, both Australia and New Zealand two or three times, Russia twice, America twice and France on half a dozen occasions. “I count myself very fortunate, not only to go to such places but to be involved with so many good people, at all levels.” I suppose Australia is always the biggest challenge? – “Yes, but it really is a different rugby culture over there. The sunshine is also a big factor towards improving playing standards but Aussie rugby league is also a lot more professional right down to junior level, as you would expect with RL being a premier sport Down Under. “Tour-wise it’s not been one way traffic; there have been a lot of reciprocal visits from overseas teams. We’ve seen our fair share in our part of the world – a privilege to see the likes of Bradley Clyde, Danny Buderus (now starring for Leeds) and Mark Gasnier (currently one the world’s highest paid stars in the other code),” Jackie enthused. Cumbrian and Great Britain youngsters have squared up against the finest youth sides ever to play the game – the Australian Schoolboys. Today those ‘Junior Kangaroos’ read like an Australian Hall of Fame - Brad Fittler, Benny Elias, Steve Menzies, Tim Brasher, Trent Barrett, Nathan Cayless, Matt Gidley, Les Boyd, Ian Schubert, E.T. (Andrew Ettingshausen), Paul Sironen, Greg Alexander, and David Fairleigh, to name just some. When the Aussie Schoolboys arrived over here to play the cream of Great Britain youth in a 1995 Centenary Test series Jackie Reid was assistant manager and the Young Lions were coached by Whitehaven’s Phil Kitchin. Phil, whose son Wayne was also a BARLA Young Lion, had coached BARLA’s Great Britain under-23s on the first-ever tour to South Africa the year before, when Mr Reid headed up the management. Notable West Cumbrians in that Centenary Test series squad for tests at Widnes and Batley were Mark Cox, Tony Dmytrowski, Marc Jackson, and Phil Sherwen (all Wath Brow Hornets), Ryan MacDonald (Broughton Red Rose), Dean Vaughan (Hensingham) and Graham Wilson (Egremont). Back in 1983 there was a memorable, historic visit to Whitehaven from the New Zealand Maoris who played Cumberland’s Open-Age side. Men like Dean and Ian Bell, Clayton Friend, Hugh McGhan, Ron O’Regan, Owen Wright and big Joe Ropati graced the Recreation Ground. Says Jackie: “Our Cumberland side had some very talented lads - John Brocklebank, Sam Bailey, Stephen Burney, Kevin Pape, John Birkett, George Allen, John Taylor, and my own son, Paul – all kids who came through the system.” One of the great highlights in BARLA history was the exotic 1990 Lions Tour of the South Pacific which had a very special West Cumbrian flavour. Captain was Paul Messenger from Kells. Other locals included Peter Smith, Brian Hyslop, Martin Oglanby, Stephen Seeds, Gary Kelly and Peter Dawson with the late Gordon Robb as tour manager and Tommy Thompson assistant coach. A real ground breaker as it was the first international tour to the Cook Islands, Western Samoa and Tonga. Four years later Jackie Reid managed England’s team to meet Wales in the first ever amateur international between the two countries at Swansea - John Allen (Lowca), Steve Holgate and Howard Hill (Hensingham) were in the starting line up with Lee Walker, from Egremont, among the subs. Another Great Britain Youth line up facing France (in 1989) showed the names of Chris Rudd, Gary Chambers, David Elliott and Stephen Wear (all Kells) rubbing shoulders with Gary Connolly, Alan Hunte and Tommy Martyn. “Talking about the South Pacific,” said Mr Reid, “I know they are very keen on coming over here again which is why I would like to see the Emerging Nations competition revived as a curtain raiser competition to the 2013 World Cup. “BARLA won the one and only Emerging Nations (in 1995) and it’s something I’d like the RFL to really think about. It’s okay expanding the World Cup to more teams but that doesn’t necessarily mean giving our own players more opportunity to take part - Emerging Nations would. “Up here in Whitehaven we are doing our level best to develop rugby league at the Cumbria Academy of Sport, which is well established as a centre of excellence, we want to do more, it could become one of the best stadiums in the north west if only people will listen, support with funding and help realise the vast potential,” says the chairman of the Trustees. “At the end of the day it’s all down to funding at all levels of the game. “When BARLA went to the South Pacific all our kids had to find the money to pay their own fares.” Jackie feels that it would probably be better for the RFL to spend more money expanding the game at junior level than in investing in developing Super League in expansion areas such as Wales. Impressions of South Africa? - “Beautiful country - the first time I went the elections were taking place, Nelson Mandela was coming to power. Things were a bit tricky staying outside Johannesburg so much so that our bus driver had a gun strapped to his hip. Going through the shanty towns we did meet a lot of nice but down trodden people, pretty unbelievable, but we were only too glad to visit these pitifully poor areas to help the kids, learn them how to play rugby. “It was slightly better the second team, only two or three years later, but it hadn’t altered a great deal, the poor remained poor and the rich still rich. “We are trying hard to get the game going in places like South Africa but again it’s all down to funding. We have to rely so much on sponsorship to send out kids away, it’s several hundred pounds apiece for every trip.” Jackie Reid, like many, would love to see West Cumbrian schools doing more to promote the game adding: “What’s first and foremost for me is getting kids to play rugby league whatever form it may take.” xboter 2014
